Mae Kampong Hydropower Plant: A Beacon of Light in the Forest
With compassion and care for the people, the hydropower project brought light to the century-old village of Ban Mae Kampong, located in Mae On District, Chiang Mai Province. Recognized as one of the top ozone-rich areas in the country, this scenic village has become a popular destination for both Thai and international tourists.
Despite its remote location nestled in the mountains far from the city, Ban Mae Kampong residents rarely face issues with power outages or shortages. This transformation began in 1979 when His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej visited the area and observed that the villagers lacked electricity for daily living and work. At night, they had to rely on kerosene lamps for illumination.
In response, the villagers humbly requested electricity from His Majesty. This marked the beginning of a new chapter, bringing light to the vast forest. Though it started as a modest effort, it sparked the development of the Village Hydropower Project in rural Chiang Mai, creating a sustainable energy solution for the community.
